Our Vision

Asheville Academy for Girls is a residential therapeutic boarding school that provides a nurturing and safe family setting with a challenging education. The campus is nestled in a cove surrounded by the beauty and natural settings of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina.

Asheville Academy’s therapeutic model is designed to help young girls and their families meet the needs of the challenging world around them. Our girls are in the “eye of the storm,” being buffeted by increasing academic expectations, more complex social environments, physical and hormonal changes, demanding media images, and most importantly, a self-perceived pattern of a failure.

Asheville Academy is grounded on two clear principals:

1. Our girls have the potential to be successful, happy young women.
2. We want to be the best possible program in meeting the educational, social, and emotional needs of adolescent girls.

To tap into their potential, our girls focus on improvement and awareness in five areas: emotional, mental, physical, social, and spiritual. Through their work, Asheville Academy girls discover their strengths and learn to share themselves with the people in their lives. The Academy’s program provides the support, life-skills coaching, community culture, academics and activities that allow the students to experience success within their selves and their family.

Therapeutic Guidance: Therapists at Asheville Academy work with the students individually and in groups, as well as with families, to address issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, impulsive behaviors, learning disabilities, inability to control anger, disorganization, lack of social skills, respect and defiance. We create a developmentally appropriate environment where distractions and challenges that an emotionally immature girl is not capable of navigating are managed to allow for success. We encourage her to be a “little girl” while she is working on the social, cognitive and emotional developmental milestones. Maturation then happens naturally, through true growth.

Academic Experience: Asheville Academy provides small, personalized college preparatory classes for students of broad ability and interest. Recognizing the clinical lens that guides the program, we focus on the strengths of the individual to build self-confidence and jumpstart a pattern of academic success.

Social Life: Girls at Asheville Academy engage in a wide variety of social and recreational activities as a way to practice the social skills they are learning.

Family Growth: Asheville Academy believes that the single most significant factor in the success of our students is family involvement in the program. When a student continues her success at home, it is largely due to the whole family’s commitment to our model.
